Meet Karlyn – Queen of the Cinco de Mayo pinata contest

Years ago my 10 year old niece was left in my care for one night a week on a regular basis.  One night we decided it was time for a family party “for no reason at all” and decided to build a pinata as the main event.

Because we had a large family it of course had to be bigger than big to hold all our goodies, right?
Because it was going to be heavy with all those goodies, it had to be strong, right?
Because it was strong, it had to be hard to break, right?
Because we had something like 17 kids from the age of 11 months to 19 years wanting to take a whack at it it had to be really, really REALLY strong, right?

And so a spring tradition was unleashed.  Each year, a different person in the family takes turns “building the indestructible pinata” to see if the creation can hold up to all the would-be victors wielding everything from a bat, to a shovel, and a handmade “spiked Matilda” a four foot flat paddle with a dozen nails protruding out that was crafted in Grandpa’s workshop to chew one pinata apart.  One year Grandpa got out the chains saw to get it open!

WE have made many shapes and themes over the years including one that was FROZEN in ice…

What will the indestructible pinata be this year?  Can’t wait to see.

Grandma Joyce

Why Table For Fifty?

For 70+ years, Grandma Joyce has been perfecting her own recipes and training a second and third generation of great cooks, All of us cook, and garden, and do-it-ourselves. It’s the way we were raised. At this writing, if you count children, children’s spouses and grandchildren, there are exactly FIFTY of us. Thus, TableForFifty is a collection of second and third generation recipes we have shared with one another.

Home Cooking Starts at Home

The family home, built in 1901 has been a place for family gatherings for five generations. Today, Grandma Joyce and Grandpa Jim maintain the home, a large vegetable garden, and enough flowers that the two of them have instituted a "don't ask, don't tell" policy with regard to the nursery and bedding plant budget.
